The Gov Geeks | Javier and Karen Lopez
KNOW WHAT OPM SAYS YOU NEED
Strategies discussed:
â Use OPMâs Handbook of Occupational Groups and Families
â Know the positionâs hiring factors
â Compare your competencies
OPM - the Office of Personnel Management â is a real big deal in the federal government. As the chief Human Resources component and personnel policy management component, this organization is responsible for a host of responsibilities. From writing job series descriptions to making sure that the policies and procedures are in place, they are the backbone to ensuring selecting officials can hire really good people to work for the American people. So, why is it important to make sure that you know what OPM says you need to have? Well, they essentially set the rule book for the process and give you the roadmap to get into government. If you want to get in or land a promotion, you should develop a strategy that meets the requirements they have laid out. In other words, know the rules youâre being evaluated against.
In an earlier chapter, we mentioned that this topic needed a space all to itself. It is definitely an important one,but not necessarily complicated. Once you get a few of these concepts down in your writing, youâll be in a much better position to excel in your job search. Heck, these are great tips that youâll use time and again throughout your career! In this chapter, weâll talk about three things to help you write a fantastic resume so you can pass the OPM test. To begin, look at OPMâs Handbook of Occupational Groups and Families. Second, know the positionâs hiring factors. Lastly, compare your competencies. When you add all three, youâll have a better sense of where your resume stands.
Use OPMâs Handbook of Occupational Groups
and Families
Let's talk a little bit more about the first one. The Handbook of Occupational Groups and Families is a goldmine of information for really everyone that is applying for a federal job. Itâs completely online and itâs completely free. It was written to help agencies begin classifying their positions. Managers need to know what level they have a mission need for so theyâll know how much the position will cost their agency. It also helps them define the scope of responsibilities reasonable for the position. They canât expect to get the work of an entire Division, Unit, or Branch from one person and pay them an entry-level salary. Thank goodness it doesnât work that way!
